I worked on this project along with Frog Hollow's Drive Youth Employment Services. This mural was designed by a resident of Hemlock Court, an affordable housing coop. It is a bright and playful hopscotch-styled mural located in their playground area.
Day 1 — Tuesday May 24, 2022
Thank you to Angelina who took these photos on my phone!
The design is made up of mostly basic repeating shapes, so we spent Day 1 making stencils in preparation for painting. I digitally laid a 7 by 11 grid over the design, with each square representing 3ft. We then projected that onto the wall, using measuring tape to scale the projection. We taped poster board to the walls for tracing, then cut them down to size.
We were originally going to paint for the rest of the week, but we had to push back the schedule due to rain. The mural is on the ground and uses road paint, which needs more time to bond with the asphalt.
Day 2 — Wednesday June 1, 2022
The next Wednesday was sunny enough for us to meet onsite and layout the design in chalk to test sizes and distances. We had a lot of fun using the chalk liner. You hold it taut across the ground, pull and snap it like the string of a bow, and it deposits a crisp line of chalk below it. Really convenient for large surfaces!
We adjusted the layout of the original design slightly to bring elements closer to the edges and leave more room in the center for playground equipment. Having the stencils was great for this, because we could move pieces around with relative ease. However, we had to tape the pieces down because even soft breezes would send the stencils flying away.
At the moment, plans to actually start painting are up in the air because we need to wait until there's over a solid week of sunshine forecasted. Meanwhile, I updated the reference design we'll be working off of to reflect our changes on site.
